Remove Lumps & Restore Healthy Skin

At Gavino Dermatology, we understand that cysts and lumps on the skin can be a nuisance. Lumps underneath the skin don’t always pose a threat, but they can eventually get infected, necessitating dermatological treatment. You can also consult a dermatologist to remove cysts if they interfere with your daily activities, such as wearing certain clothes, or cause self-consciousness. Through various treatments, such as surgical removal or topical creams, we effectively remove lumps and restore healthy skin.

What Are Cysts?

Cysts are non-cancerous lumps that can develop on the skin and be either fluid-filled or solid. They can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the face, scalp, ears, and back. They can range from as small as a pea to as large as a golf ball. Cysts can start as benign and painless, but if they become infected/inflamed, you need to contact a dermatologist immediately. Even if the cyst isn’t infected, it’s worth looking at.

Causes of Cysts

Cysts are caused by numerous factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and blocked oil ducts. They can also be caused by skin conditions, such as acne, folliculitis, and sebaceous cysts, and certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Injury or trauma to the skin can also lead to cysts. It’s important to have a professional diagnosis to determine the exact cause of your cyst and curate a personalized treatment plan.

Symptoms of Cysts:

  • A small raised bump on the skin
  • A lump that feels hard to the touch
  • A lump that is mobile and can be moved around under the skin
  • A lump that is painful or tender to the touch
  • Redness or swelling around the lump
  • A lump that is filled with fluid, pus, or blood
  • A lump that causes discomfort while performing daily activities
  • A lump that doesn’t go away after a long time

Cyst Treatment Options

Cysts can occur because of numerous underlying conditions, and they can also present different symptoms. Furthermore, some cysts are completely harmless, and some may display signs of inflammation and infections. Your dermatologist will carefully examine the cyst, look for signs and symptoms of infections, and curate a personalized treatment plan, which may include injections, antibiotics, drainage, or surgical excision.

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections are a common treatment for cysts. They can reduce inflammation and decrease the size of the cyst. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, and the cyst usually shrinks within a week.

Antibiotics

If the cyst becomes infected, antibiotics may be prescribed to clear up the infection and reduce inflammation. These medications can be taken orally or applied topically. Antibiotics can be accompanied by other treatments, such as surgical excision.

Surgical Drainage

Surgical drainage is another option for treating cysts. This procedure involves making a small incision in the cyst and draining the fluid and pus. This method is typically used for larger cysts, but there’s a higher risk of recurrence.

Surgical Excision

Surgical excision removes the cyst completely. This procedure involves making an incision and removing the entire cyst with a small margin of surrounding tissue. This method is typically used for larger, recurrent, and/or infected cysts.
